With a clear emphasis on sustainability, cutting edge design and attention to detail, this rural project at Somers beside Western Port Bay has delivered a striking yet warm and inviting family home full of light and capturing wide vistas beyond an inground pool and outdoor entertaining terrace.

Walls of tall north-facing double glazing and polished concrete floors that trap winter warmth, a tightly sealed interior, European PVC open-and-tilt window systems and hydronic heating that includes piping in a concrete entry wall to act as a giant radiator demonstrate its credentials as a truly modern eco-friendly home.

An enormous central living area has high-set clerestory windows that are electronically controlled to release warm air in summer and create cross-flow ventilation, while a suspended concrete hearth and wood burner add rural ambience and a massive spotted gum sliding door opens the space to a second living area.

Other innovative touches even extend to the laundry that takes advantage of the back of the heated entry wall to act as a drying room, and recessed blinds that roll up out of sight to protect the sleek clean lines of the interior.

Outside, the rural character of the home is expressed in finely detailed corrugated iron, spotted gum and pre-cast concrete with a steel-framed pergola extending over the alfresco terrace that further promotes its sturdy and commanding presence on the landscape.

The pavilion design also allows for the easy addition of more bedrooms or living space.
